subTEXT (March 1): Utterances & Images

We'll be reading at subTEXT in March.

The subTEXT literary reading group first started in May 2001, this series of readings was previously hosted at Gallery Hotel and The Book Cafe before it moved to Central Lending Library in September 2005. It has featured local writers as well as international guests.

Programme details as follows:
In the Year of the Boar, subTEXT continues to add literary spice than bore.
Airline captain, Elmo Jayawardena, will read excerpts from his first book,
Sam's Story, while Mei Ching Tan will share from her latest book, Towards
the Blue: Adventures of a City Wimp. Other speakers include Suchen Christine
Lim, prize-winning local author who has penned novels like Fistful of
Colours and A Bit of Earth, and two school teachers, Jasmine Seah and
Jennifer Koh, who collaborated on a new book, Light is Like Water, which
features poems written by Jasmine that are inspired by Jennifer's

a mixture of art, architecture, illustration, film, photography, poetry and some exhibitionism to boot.
we did the conventional show-and-tell. big book reading for grown-ups.

light is like water was launched along with 2 other titles by ethos books- colin tan's the evidence of the senses and tan mei ching's towards the blue- adventures of a city wimp.

we talked a bit about our working process and read three short poems (well they are all rather short anyway) set to nifty powerpoint slideshow.

the tea provided by kenny and karen- owners of singapore's quirkiest bookstore- was first rate. earl grey never tasted better. (later found out it was carrefour's in-house brand)

thank you to all who came down to listen and support.

why we do what we do

do you want the long answer or the short one? :)

in short, because we love it, that's why.
i like taking pictures and jasmine likes writing.
i like writing too but i think she does it better.
one day i might try writing, and perhaps jas might take pictures although she says no, not for now anyway.

and then the longer one.
well we do hope and sincerely wish for art to be less about self-gratification and more about helping others. we'd like to help children discover themselves and their world through writing and photography. as such we are donating all profits and royalties earned from the sale of light is like water to a fund that is dedicated to such a cause. to be honest, we are still in the process of deciding which fund to contribute to, although at the moment it seems to be kidswithcameras.org- an organisation that seeks to help children in developing countries find their voice through photography.

we are also interested in readings and workshops which aim to encourage young writers and artists to start on their own creative projects.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

2. spread the word about our mission
3. suggest collaborations/ readings/ workshops we can run
4. let us know if you are aware of specific organisations/ funds with a similar vision we can contribute to

thank you for your interest in our project and this journey.
